Personalized books for kids: what makes a good one

Your child opens a book and sees themselves on the cover. If it is a good one, they carry it to bed and ask for it again the next night. If it is just their name dropped into someone else’s tale, it soon joins the pile.

A name in the text is only the start

The simplest personalized books are a fixed template: the same story for every child, with only the name swapped and sometimes the character’s hair color. It is a nice touch, but some children soon notice it isn’t really about them.

A good personalized book goes further. The hero looks like your child, with their freckles, their jacket and their rain boots. And the story comes from their life: a favorite dinosaur, a grandpa who makes the best pancakes, a baby sister on the way.

What to look for before you buy

A few questions worth asking before you pay:

  • Does your child look the same on every page, not one way here and another there?
  • Is the story built from what you share about your child, or is it the same text for everyone?
  • Does the text fit their age? A two-year-old needs a few lines per page, an eight-year-old a real adventure.
  • Can you see the cover and first pages before paying?
  • What happens to your child’s photo if you add one? Who keeps it, and for how long?
  • Can someone else join the story: a sibling, a friend, the family dog?

Why a personalized book works when you read together

Many children listen differently when they hear their own name in a story. They might lean in, point at themselves in the picture and tell you what the hero should do next. Bedtime reading stops being a chore and becomes something you do together.

A book like this can also open a conversation. If your child is nervous about starting preschool or waiting for a new sibling, a hero with their face can go through it first. Then it is easier to ask, “And how do you feel about it?”

The cover of the sample book

Page 1Something in the garden shed went HIC! Leo pressed his red wellie against the door. “Hello?” HIC! A puff of grey smoke wriggled out of the keyhole. Leo pulled the handle. Behind the watering can, two amber eyes blinked back at him. Who was in there?

How a minibooks story is made

Type your child’s name, age and a few words about how they look. A photo is optional, stays private and is deleted as soon as you approve the portrait, or within about a day. Then tell us what is happening in their life and what they love, and pick a style and the listening age: 2–4, 5–7 or 8–10. One book can have up to 3 heroes.

You see the cover and first pages free in 2–3 minutes. If you don’t like the portrait, ask for another drawing. When you want the whole book, pay $14.99 once and get the cover and 12 illustrated pages to read on any phone, tablet or computer, plus a PDF to print, within minutes. You can add the audiobook for $4.99, when you buy or any time later: every page is read aloud, with each word lighting up as it is read. You can also download it as an MP3.

When to give a personalized book

For a birthday, at Christmas or for no occasion at all, when something big is happening in your child’s life: a move, a new preschool, a new baby in the family. The story becomes a keepsake of that particular year.

Whatever book you choose, write a short dedication on the first page, wrap it with a toy that appears in the story, or save the first read for the day itself. With minibooks, print the PDF at home or at a print shop and wrap it like any book. Send the private link to grandparents who live far away, so they can read it to your child over the phone.
